A couple of rants

1) It seems that in Yunnan it is impossible to get a SIM card with International SMS and International calling. China Mobile in Yunnan Province offers a plethora of different SIM cards with different rates and services but combining them is somehow beyond them and voicemail isn’t available in Yunnan at all yet. My friend tells me from a reliable source that this is entirely intentional so that people buy a handful of different SIM cards and spend more money to use these different services.

2) The thought police in their infinate wisdom have decided to make it difficult to access gmail. Thankfully I can still access my spiritually polluting email account through a proxy.

I need a trip home. Luckily I’m having one next week!

    Hey G,

I have been here for a month, only had a couple days where there were issues with gmail. Not sure if they are China-related.

A few ideas you may already be familiar with that could help with web-browsing and international calls if you have your own computer to install some stuff:

If you want to escape all web restrictions, try Tor (tor.eff.org). It allows you to browse anonymously and get to any site you want. It slows down your browsing, but you can turn it off when you don’t need to access things like foreign news…

I use skype for all my international calls—costs 2cents a minute to many countries. www.skype.com. You just buy $10 credit at a time. Calls are usually clear if you have a headset/microphone (you call over your computer), and a high-speed connection.

    Hope this info is helpful

Already been onto both Tor and Skype for a while, both very useful.

    Thanks.
